A Brief History of Riga
Riga was established around 1201, although this date is often disputed. In this year the Bishop Albert arrived from Bremen with around 500 crusaders and settled nearby to present day Riga. It is clear that there have been other settlers on the site and along the Daugava for centuries before these crusaders from Bremen arrived.
There has been many different invaders, occupiers, traders, merchants, travelers all passing through the Baltic region and Riga has had its fair share of them all!
Although established originally as a strong hold and trading outpost during the Northern crusades, Riga soon transformed itself into one of the most important, strategic port cities of Northern Europe.
